Discover my journey into sustainable farming, from struggles to success with drip irrigation, composting, and organic farming techniques.
I still remember the day I decided to return to my rural
home and start farming. The city life had drained me—endless hustle, noisy streets, and an
uncertain future in an office job that barely sustained me. So, I packed my
bags and headed back to the fertile lands of Western Kenya, where my ancestors
had tilled the soil for generations.
Embracing
the Farmer's Life
My first farming season was a test of patience and
resilience. I chose maize and beans, the staple crops of our region, hoping
they would sustain my family and provide some income. The old, rusted jembe
(hoe) in my grandfather’s store became my closest companion. I tilled the land
manually, waking up at dawn and working until the sun set behind the hills. My
hands, once used to typing on a keyboard, now bore blisters from the hard
labor.
The elders in the village, seeing my struggles, offered
wisdom that no book could teach. “Farming is not just about planting and
waiting,” Mzee Amugongo told me one afternoon as we rested under a mugumo tree.
“You must know the language of the land. Observe the rain patterns, talk to the
soil, and understand the rhythm of nature.”
I took his words to heart. I watched the sky daily, learned
the behavior of birds and insects, and slowly began to understand the unspoken
conversations of the land. When the first rains came, my heart swelled with
hope. The tiny green shoots pushing through the soil felt like a reward for my
perseverance.
The Harsh
Reality of Farming
But farming is never without its trials. Just when the crops
were knee-high, an unexpected drought hit. My once-green fields turned brown
under the scorching sun. I was devastated, but I refused to give up. I started
fetching water from a nearby stream, carrying jerrycans on my shoulders like a
warrior on a mission. Neighbors laughed at my determination, but I pressed on.
Then, as if nature had taken pity on me, the rains
returned—light at first, then stronger. My crops revived, and when harvest time
came, I reaped more than I had ever imagined. As I filled sacks of maize and
beans, I realized that farming is more than just a livelihood—it is a lesson in
resilience, patience, and respect for the land.
Gaining
Hands-on Experience, Overcoming Post-Harvest Challenges, and Growing High-Value
Crops
Through trial and error, I have gained hands-on experience that no textbook could provide. One of the most critical lessons I learned was how to adapt to the ever-changing agricultural landscape, balancing tradition with modern techniques. I experimented with different crops, tested organic fertilizers, and even faced setbacks due to unpredictable weather patterns. But each challenge brought a valuable lesson that made me a better farmer.
Over time, I have also ventured into growing high-value crops such as strawberries, bell peppers, and herbs like rosemary and basil. These crops have not only increased my farm's profitability but have also introduced me to modern farming techniques that enhance quality and yield.

However, one of the biggest challenges I faced was post-harvest losses. At first, I struggled with proper storage, transportation, and market fluctuations, which led to wastage and financial setbacks. But through persistence and continuous learning, I have now mastered the art of post-harvest handling. Today, I confidently manage post-harvest processes, ensuring that my produce maintains its quality from the farm to the consumer.
I have perfected techniques in proper storage, value addition, and
establishing strong market linkages, minimizing losses and maximizing returns.

initially led to wastage and financial setbacks. Through continuous learning
and adaptation, I have now mastered post-harvest handling techniques, including
proper storage, value addition, and market linkages, ensuring minimal losses
and maximum returns. I have learned the importance of soil fertility, crop
rotation, and organic farming practices. With each passing season, I refine my
techniques, ensuring better yields while preserving the health of my land.
In my journey, I have also embraced sustainable farming
techniques such as drip irrigation, composting, mulching, and rainwater
harvesting. These innovations have transformed my farm, making it more
resilient to climate change while maximizing productivity with minimal resource
wastage. These methods have not only improved my farm’s productivity but have
also reduced dependency on expensive chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Sustainable farming is the future, and I am proud to be part of this
transformation.
Expanding
Beyond Crops and Market Growth
Today, I proudly call myself a farmer. I have expanded to include indigenous vegetables and poultry, ensuring my farm remains sustainable. Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges that shaped me. Over time, I realized that farming is not just about growing crops but also about finding the right market. I initially struggled to find buyers for my produce, sometimes selling at a loss.
However, by networking with other farmers
and local agribusiness experts, I learned the importance of market research, direct-to-consumer
sales, and strategic partnerships. This shift in approach has helped me
increase my profits while ensuring my produce reaches consumers at peak
freshness. Farming is not just about feeding oneself; it is about nurturing
life, preserving heritage, and embracing the unpredictable beauty of nature.
Additionally, I have ventured into agribusiness by selling organic produce directly to consumers. If you're interested in fresh, organic farm produce, feel free to contact me for direct orders. The demand for chemical-free, fresh farm produce is growing, and I am leveraging digital marketing to reach a wider audience.
By creating valuable online content and engaging with potential customers, I ensure my farm’s website attracts more visitors, making it easier for people to find my products. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp have also played a crucial role in expanding my customer base, allowing me to engage with buyers directly and build a loyal following. Through my blog, I educate aspiring farmers on best practices, providing them with insights drawn from my personal experiences.

The
Future of My Farming Journey and Call to Action
As I sit on my porch, watching the golden sun sink behind
the hills, I smile. This land has given me more than food—it has given me
purpose. I plan to integrate agroforestry and aquaponics, making
my farm a model of sustainable agriculture and a learning center for aspiring
farmers looking to adopt eco-friendly farming techniques. By sharing my
journey, I hope to inspire others to embrace farming, whether as a full-time
venture or as a means of food security. For more insights, visit Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research
